ONE-ON-ONE CONNECTIONS

Practice English.
Start with a real conversation.

Choose a familiar topic, ask whether the other person wants to speak English, and give yourself room to think. An ordinary conversation can be a useful place to practice.

Agree on what kind of conversation you want

Begin by asking whether the other person is comfortable speaking English. Explain that you would like an informal conversation and ask whether they want to help you practice. A willing partner matters more than trying to turn every social call into a language exercise.

HIYAK is a social video chat service, not a language school or a source of guaranteed teachers or native speakers. A person may prefer another language or simply want to chat without correcting you. Respect that choice and find a format you both enjoy.

Use a simple three-part speaking routine

PartWhat to doAn example
DescribeExplain something familiar in a few sentences.Describe a meal you like making.
AskInvite the other person to share their experience. What do you enjoy cooking?
Follow upUse one detail from their answer. How did you learn to make that?

You can use the same routine for hobbies, films or weekend plans. Keep the subject narrow enough that you do not need specialist vocabulary. The purpose is to build an exchange, not to deliver a prepared speech while the other person waits.

Keep a few useful phrases nearby

  • “Could you say that a little more slowly?”
  • “I know the idea, but I cannot remember the word.”
  • “Do you mean that you prefer the first option?”
  • “Could you give me an example?”
  • “Let me try saying that another way.”

Choose phrases you can say comfortably rather than memorizing a long list. If you miss a word, asking about it is often clearer than pretending to understand. A short pause to think is part of conversation; you do not need to fill every moment.

Choose how corrections should work

Ask whether you both want to correct mistakes during the conversation or mention one or two points afterward. Constant interruption can make it hard to follow a story, while no correction at all may be fine if your goal is simply to become more comfortable speaking.

An informal partner’s suggestion may reflect personal usage rather than a formal grammar rule. Check unfamiliar expressions later in a reliable dictionary or learning resource. Avoid presenting another user’s opinion as professional instruction, and never assume someone has agreed to teach without being asked.

Finish with one thing to reuse

After the call, write down one phrase you wanted to say and one topic you would like to try again. Make notes about your own learning without recording or copying the other person’s private information. You do not need a score for every conversation.

On a later call, use the phrase in a new example rather than repeating an entire script. If you return to HIYAK, check who is available and the current call cost each time. Informal practice can complement other learning, but it does not promise fluency, assessment or a qualification.

Questions, answered.

Can I use HIYAK for informal English practice?

You can ask a willing conversation partner to speak English with you. HIYAK does not guarantee a teacher, native speaker or structured lesson.

Should I ask for every mistake to be corrected?

Agree on that together. You might prefer a conversation first and one or two suggestions afterward.

Do I need advanced English to begin?

Choose a familiar subject and explain your level honestly. Continue only if both people are comfortable with the pace and format.
