Give the person your attention

Try to start a call when you have a few uninterrupted minutes. Put unrelated notifications aside and avoid watching another video while someone is talking. If you need to step away, say so instead of leaving them wondering.

Check your audio at the beginning. Background noise, loud music or an uncovered microphone in a busy space can make a pleasant conversation tiring. Headphones are useful if your speaker creates an echo.

Leave room between turns

A small connection delay can make two people speak at the same time. Wait a moment after someone finishes. If you overlap, let them continue and pick up your thought afterward.

Balance questions with your own answers. “What do you enjoy cooking? I have been trying a few easy soups” gives both people a way into the topic. A rapid series of questions can feel less like interest and more like an interview.

Respect the things someone does not share

Do not insist on a real name, location, relationship status or contact details. If someone declines a subject, change it. A short answer can also be a sign that the topic is not comfortable.

Ask before introducing another person on camera, taking a screenshot or recording. A refusal is enough; there is no need to negotiate it. The same applies to your own boundaries.

Handle common moments kindly

SituationSomething you can say
You both start talking“Go ahead. I would like to hear what you were saying.”
You missed a sentence“The sound cut out for a moment. Could you say that again?”
You want a different topic“I would rather keep that private. What have you been enjoying lately?”
You need to leave“Thanks for talking with me. I need to go now. Take care.”

Let the ending be an ending

If a person needs to go, thank them and let them leave. Do not keep restarting a conversation after they have said goodbye. If you want to chat again, ask once and respect the answer.

An unanswered call is not an invitation to call repeatedly. People may be busy or offline. A considerate follow-up, where messaging is available, is more useful than a stream of call attempts.
